Román Beatrice Cenci je vášnivou obhajobou krásnej devy Beatrice, ktorá sa zaplietla do temnej príhody. Vražda jej otca Francesca Cenciho, násilníka, hýrivca, človeka bez citu, skrýva v sebe veľa záhad. Podľa niektorých prameňov celá rodina sa dohodla na odstránení nenávideného Cenciho, ktorý trápil, ba umučil aj svoje deti. Podľa inej tradície Cenci šiel vo svojej hýrivosti tak ďaleko, že chcel zneužiť aj vlastnú dcéru. Jej milý Guido Guerra ho preto zavraždil. Rímske súdy obviňujú z tohto činu Beatrice Cenci a ostatných príslušníkov rodiny.

Autor však rovnako dôsledne stvárnil ľudí bojujúcich proti osudu, ktorí nikdy nezahodia zbraň, ak má poslúžiť vlasti a vznešeným ideálom...
