Vojnový román Na západe nič nové, ktorý vyšiel v roku 1929, preslávil autora takpovediac za noc. V priebehu osemnástich mesiacov bol preložený do 25 jazykov a vyšiel v celkovom náklade 3,5 milióna výtlačkov. Jeho filmové spracovanie vyvolalo skutočný škandál: verejnosť bola šokovaná pravdivým, realistickým zobrazením vojny, ktorá zničila celú vtedajšiu mladú generáciu, pretože neodvratne predurčovala osudy – aj osud devätnásťročného Paula Bäumera a jeho šiestich spolužiakov, ktorí nasadzovali svoje životy v nezmyselných bojoch netušiac, že z hrozného vojnového besnenia pre nich už niet návratu.
