„Dvadsaťtisíc míľ pod morom“ (v origináli: Vingt milles lieues sous les mers) je asi jeden z najznámejších vedecko-fantastických románov Julesa Verna. Koncom devätnásteho storočia sa vo vodách svetových morí a oceánov začínajú diať podivuhodné veci. Na mnohých miestach „čosi“ poškodzuje ba aj potápa lode. Na verejnosti sa prevláda názor, že všetky tieto záhady má na svedomí neznáma morská príšera. Keď je raz napadnutá dôležitá medzinárodná loď, zistí sa že diera, ktorú údajne vytvorila príšera má tvar pravidelného trojuholníka. Na rozlúštenie tejto záhady je vyslaná loď Abraham Lincoln. Výpravu tvorí vedec Pierre Aronnax – profesor parížskeho múzea, jeho asistent Conseil a slávny „kráľ harpunárov“ – Kanaďan Ned Land. Loď mieri do Tichého oceánu k Japonsku. Ale príšera si nenechá ujsť túto príležitosť a zaútočí nárazom aj na Abraháma Lincolna. Arronax, Conseil aj Ned pri útoku spadnú z lode do oceánu a pristanú na "príšere". Po čase zistia, že je to len veľká plechová konštrukcia, ktorú riadi záhadný kapitán Nemo.
