Susan Hagen Nippová sa narodila a vyrastala v Spokane vo Washingtone. Hudba obklopovala jej rodinu, spievali v kostolnom zbore, spievali v t riách a kvartetách a hrali na rôzne hudobné nástroje. Susan študovala klavír a flautu a bola v stredoškolskom a vysokoškolskom orchestri a zbore. Po absolvovaní učila angličtinu na strednej škole vo Washingtone a neskôr na základnej škole hudbu v Oregone. Susan a jej manžel Charlie žijú v Coeur d’Alene v Idahu.
