Tobias Smollett patrí do skupiny zakladateľov anglického humoristického a realistického románu. Mal vynikajúcu schopnosť vytvárať charaktery; nezabudnuteľné sú jeho typy anglických námorníkov, ktorým svojou tvorbou zaistil nesmrteľnosť.
