Ioanna Karystiani wurde im Jahr 1952 in Chania, Kreta geboren. Nach ihrem Jurastudium in Athen machte sie sich als Cartoonistin und Drehbuchautorin einen Namen. Sie arbeitete in Kooperation mit 'Greek Public Television', dem ZDF und 'MTV Finnland' an Serienproduktionen, Künstler- und Autorenportraits. Sie portraitierte u. a. Christa Wolf, Yoran Silt und Karolos Koun. Ihre Cartoons erschienen in führenden Athener Tageszeitungen und Magazinen. Ihre Cartoonsammlungen wurden in Griechenland publiziert, in zahlreichen anderen europäischen Ländern und den USA. Für das Fernsehen zeichnete Karystiani Cartoons und Collagen zur Musik des großen Komponisten und Oskargewinners Manos Hadjidakis, für seine jüngste LP entwarf sie den Videoclip. Zuletzt war Ioanna Karystiani am Szenenentwurf des Films Brides beteiligt, die Regie in diesem Film führt Pantelis Voulagris, Produzent ist Martin Scorsese. Ihr literarisches Debut feierte Ioanna Karystiani mit einer Kurzgeschichtensammlung, die von vier verschiedenen Theaterensembles bearbeitet wurde. Die Frauen von Andros war ihr erster Roman und wurde sofort ein großer Erfolg. Er hielt sich monatelang auf der griechischen Bestsellerliste, wurde 1998 mit dem griechischen Staatspreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet und für den Aristeion-Preis nominiert. Übersetzungen des Romans Die Frauen von Andros ins Italienische, Französische und Bulgarische liegen vor. Ioanna Karystiani lebt in Athen und auf Andros.
