Rozprávačom je Nick Carraway, ktorého sused je James Gatz, záhadný boháč pochybnej povesti. Vysvitne, že je to Jay Gatsby, veľký boháč zo stredozápadu, ktorý sa rozhodol dobyť späť Daisy, ktorá ním kedysi pohrdla, lebo nebol dosť bohatý. Veľký Gatsby ešte naplno zachytáva lesk a vábenie nového povojnového sveta patriaceho mladým, ale cítiť v ňom už vytriezvenie a kritický odstup. Zaujímavé sú aj autobiografické prvky - príbeh lásky medzi Gatsbym a Daisy pripomína vojnovú známosť medzi mladým Fitzgeraldom a Zeldou Sayrovou, ktorej otec, miestny sudca, príkro nápadníka odmietol s tým, aby sa ani neukazoval, kým nebude vedieť poskytnúť jeho dcére život, na aký je z domu navyknutá. A tak ako sa Posledný mogul opieral o skutočný príbeh hollywoodskeho producenta Irvinga Thalberga, aj postava Gatsby ho dostala niektoré črty gangstra známeho pod menom „Legs\" Diamond. Najpodstatnejší tomto príbehu je však jeho citový náboj a napriek všetkým ohňostrojom ľahtikárstva a mondénnosti - morálna jednoznačnosť. A áno, finále bejzbalovej ligy roku 1919 naozaj skorumpovali. Aj keď sa ten pán nevolal Wolfshiem....
