Set in the Dutch East Indies and Nazi-occupied Holland, the story follows five-year-old Lulu, who navigates a magical world filled with daydreams and island myths. Her innocent remark about a mysterious scene leads to significant repercussions that span years and continents. As her family is drawn from the lush tropics back to The Hague, they embark on a perilous journey through Marseilles, Paris, and London, ultimately facing the challenges of war and the need to go into hiding.

Na bijna vijftien jaar stilte maakte Helga Ruebsamen in 1988 een opzienbarende comeback met de verhalenbundel Op Scheveningen. In veel van haar verhalen gaat de voorkeur uit naar personages met een, op zijn zachts gezegd, non-conformistische levensstijl, zoals Koos en zijn moeder Cootje in hun Scheveningse volksbuurt. Met evenveel plezier beschrijft Ruebsamen in 'De meisjes uit Marlot' de zusjes Cateau en Emilie uit de gegoede burgerij, die feestend en drinkend hun ondergang tegemoet gaan.
