THEODORE DREISER (1871-1945), predposledný z trinástich detí nemeckého prisťahovalca do USA, prežil trpké detstvo v ustavičnej biede, ktorá bola údelom početnej rodiny. Mladý Dreiser sa ťažko prebíjal životom, prešiel mnohými povolaniami, neskôr sa uplatnil ako novinár a úspešný reportér anapokon sa celkom venoval literatúre. Roku 1900 debutoval románom Sestra Carrie, ktorý vyvolal veľký rozruch. Roky 1910 — 1915 sú pre Dreisera rokmi intenzívnej spisovateľskej práce. Postupne vychádzajú diela Jenny Gerhardtová (1911), Finančník (1912), Titan (1914), Génius (1915). Dreiserova tvorba vrcholí románom Americká tragédia (1925). V Sestre Carrie, ako aj v ostatných svojich románoch Dreiser rozvádza myšlienku o nesmiernej príťažlivosti bohatstva a túžby po spoločenskom uplatnení, ktorá v mladých ľuďoch potláča všetky city. Osudy hrdinov zasadzuje do rozsiahleho chodu amerického života a sú zároveň obžalobou americkej spoločnosti. Súd nad touto spoločnosťou vyslovil Dreiser v diele Tragická Amerika, ktoré vyšlo roku 1931. 3. slovenské vydanie.

Druhý muž v jej živote, Lester Kane, má Jennie svojim spôsobom rád. Žije s ňou dlhé roky, zmieri sa aj s prítomnosťou jej dcéry, ktorá sa narodila po Branderovej smrti. Lester však nevie dlho vzdorovať spoločenskej mienke. A opäť je to Jennie, ktorá sa obetuje. Vzdáva sa ho, aby mu neprekážala na ceste za spoločenskou slávou a majetkom. Nikdy však Lestera neprestala ľubiť, nikdy mu nevyčítala, že ju opustil. On sám postupne prichádza na to, že Jennie bola jedinou ženou, ktorá preňho znamenala pokoj a lásku.

Roku 1906 istý americký mladík zaviedol mladé dievča na jazero a tam ho utopil. Bola to posledná kapitola mládencových stykov s dievčaťom. Predchádzali sladké týždne dvorenia, medové dni lásky, nepokojné chvíle presýtenia a odporu.
