Die Studie befasst sich mit dem von der Literaturkritik vernachlässigten Frühwerk Joyce Carys. Die Afrikaromane werden in den Kontext der Begegnung der europäischen Kultur mit Afrika im Zeitalter des Kolonialismus gebracht, die Sichtweise Carys als Teil des kulturellen Verständnisses unserer eigenen Zeit problematisiert. Die Arbeit versucht, ausgehend von der Zeitgeschichte und dem Wandel Afrikas in der europäischen Perspektive und ihrer Kulturideologie, den Beitrag zu erfassen, den Cary für das Verstehen der Kulturkonflikte vor diesem Hintergrund leistet.
