Žil v búrlivej dobe náboženských konfliktov a zdôrazňoval potrebu silnej centrálnej moci národnej monarchie ako riešenie vnútorných sporov. Jeho dielo sa zaoberalo nielen politickou filozofiou, ale aj problematikou démonológie.
