Peter Kosta sa zameriava na biolingvistiku a teóriu jazyka, pričom skúma univerzálne princípy, generatívnu syntax a formálnu sémantiku. Jeho práca sa zaoberá teóriou rečových aktov a konverzačnou analýzou, a to s ohľadom na jazykovú politiku a typológiu. Hlboko sa ponoril do štúdia slovanských jazykov, vrátane ruštiny, češtiny a ďalších, rovnako ako starovekých indoeurópskych jazykov a románskych jazykov. V súčasnosti sa podieľa na medzinárodnom projekte, ktorý skúma jazykové poruchy z pohľadu biolingvistiky a genetiky.
