Tri príbehy, ktoré porozprával Umberto Eco a ilustroval Eugenio Carmi, pre malých aj veľkých, čiže pre každého, kto potrebuje rozprávky. Maliar EUGENIO CARMI sám seba označoval za výrobcu obrázkov. Pri Umbertovi Ecovi sa z neho stal ilustrátor. UMBERTO ECO bol filozof, odborník na stredovek, semiológ a spisovateľ. Sám seba označoval za výrobcu slov. Pri Eugeniovi Carmim sa z neho stal rozprávkar.

Je posledný novembrový týždeň roku 1327. Do bližšie nemenovaného bohatého opátstva v strednom Taliansku prichádza mladý benediktínsky novic Adso so svojím učiteľom, učeným františkánom Viliamom z Baskervillu. Časové rozmedzie jedného týždňa, ktorým je ohraničený dej románu, je plné búrlivých udalostí. Adso zažije vášnivé milostné vzplanutie, stáva sa svedkom inkvizičného súdu a najmä účastníkom vyšetrovania série záhadných úmrtí mladých mníchov, ku ktorým dochádza deň po dni akoby v duchu proroctva Apokalypsy. Pátranie po páchateľovi krvavých vrážd privádza Viliama s Adsonom do srdca opátstva, do knižnice, ktorá má podobu labyrintu. V nej sa skrýva rozlúštenie tajomstva. Přednášky významného italského myslitele Umberta Eca o podstatě interpretace a polemické příspěvky současných filozofů k těmto textům. Z obálky knihy: Text je nástroj, vynájdený na to, aby utvoril svojho modelového čitateľa. Opakujem: tento čitateľ nie je autorom „jedinej správnej“ domnienky. Text môže rátať aj s takým modelovým čitateľom, ktorý má právo pokúsiť sa o nekonečný počet domnienok. Empirický čitateľ je len aktérom, vyslovujúcim domnienky o povahe modelového čitateľa, ktorého postuluje text. Keďže zámerom textu je v podstate vytvárať modelového čitateľa, schopného vyslovovať o ňom domnienky, vynachádzavosť modelového čitateľa spočíva v nájdení modelového, teda nie empirického, autora, ktorý v konečnom dôsledku splýva so zámerom textu. Text je teda viac než len parametrom, použitým na zhodnotenie interpretácie, je objektom, ktorý vytvára interpretácia v procese kruhové­ho úsilia o potvrdenie svojej právoplatnosti na základe toho, čo podáva ako svoj výsledok. Nehanbím sa priznať, že tak definujem starý a stále platný „hermeneutický kruh“.

Na začiatku roka 1995 navrhol časopis Liberal kardinálovi Martinimu a Umbertovi Ecovi, aby spolu začali viesť dialóg. Táto knižočka následne v roku 1996 priniesla listy, ktoré si títo dvaja velikáni napísali, a bola preložená do šestnástich jazykov.

Kniha krátkych textov svetoznámeho talianskeho románopisca, literárneho vedca a medievalistu už niekoľko desaťročí poskytuje inteligentnú zábavu domácim a zahraničným čitateľom. Pôvodná zbierka literárnych paródií a divertiment vyšla ešte v roku 1963, no postupne sa rozrástla o pokračovanie vtipných a ironických návodov na použitie, v ktorých autor pranieruje nedostatky a negatívne črty modernej civilizovanej spoločnosti. Aj páry unavené hľadaním pravdy tu nájdu odpovede na svoje otázky. Je to kniha, ktorej čisté a triezve stránky, nezaťažené fetišistickým uspokojením, by mohli pomôcť opätovne nájsť zdravší zmysel citového vzťahu a omladiť nenávistné či nudné spolužitie muža a ženy, ochudobnené o zmysel základných hodnôt, pri ktorých každý zdravý jednotlivec musí cítiť, že ich treba oživiť. Zbierka šestnástich esejí je pomenovaná podľa prvej z nich, v ktorej sa venuje mimoriadne aktuálnej téme – potrebe určitej spoločnosti mať svojho nepriateľa a vytvoriť si jeho obraz. Jej skutočným názvom by však mal byť skôr jej podtitul, čiže „príležitostná spisba“. Príležitostnú spisbu robí príležitostnou fakt, že autor zvyčajne nemal v úmysle zaoberať sa takou alebo onakou témou, ale priviedla ho k tomu výzva, aby sa zapojil do série rozhovorov. Tieto Ecove texty sa preto vyznačujú tematickou rôznorodosťou, ktorá siaha až k mladíckym literárnym láskam a pokračuje otázkami poetiky alebo etiky medicínskeho výskumu až po predstavenie jeho vlastnej autorskej tvorby.

Aj vo svojom ďalšom románe Baudolino zostal Umberto Eco (autor bestselleru Meno ruže) verný historickému žánru. Tentoraz píše rozprávanú kroniku. Zachytáva rozprávanie ľudového šibala Baudolina, ktorý diktuje byzantskému kronikárovi Nicetovi. Rozprávačom nie je vzdelanec, ako v ostatných Ecových knihách, ponorený do sveta kníh a rukopisov, ale veselý, ľahkovážny chlapec, syn sedliakov z dedinky v okolí Piemontu.
