Arthurovi Dentovi, celkom obyčajnému človiečikovi kdesi z Anglicka, raz vo štvrtok ráno prídu zdemolovať dom, vraj kvôli stavbe diaľničného obchvatu. Snaží sa tomu zabrániť bojovným polihovaním pred buldozérom, no jeden z jeho priateľov, Ford Prefect, ho viac-menej nasilu odtiahne do krčmy na tri bleskurýchle pivá, pretože sa blíži koniec sveta. Asi o 12 minút neskôr koniec sveta skutočne nastane v podobe stavebnej čaty mimozemskej rasy Vogónov, ktorí prídu zdemolovať Zem kvôli stavbe hyperpriestorovej diaľnice. Tesne pred touto, pre všetkých ostatných smrteľnou udalosťou, sa Arthur s Fordom presunú na vogónsku stavebnú loď, ktorá ich odvezie do hlbín vesmíru. Ford totiž nepochádza z Guildfordu, ako na Zemi zvyčajne tvrdil, ale z malej planéty kdesi v okolí Betelgeuze, a pracuje ako terénny prieskumník pozoruhodnej knihy s názvom Stopárov sprievodca galaxiou – akéhosi elektronického bedekra pre vesmírnych stopárov obsahujúceho všetky informácie, ktoré potrebujete, ak túžite vidieť krásy vesmíru za menej ako tridsať altairských dolárov denne.

Vo štvrtom dieli Sprievodcu sa Arthur vracia na planétu, o ktorej bol hlboko presvedčený, že už neexistuje. Stretáva sa tam s dievčinou svojich snov, no kvôli vysoko nepravdepodobnej náhode (vyhrá v tombole a pri prevzatí ceny odovzdá tiket, na ktorý si napísal jej telefónne číslo) ju zasa stráca. Nájde ju až po tom, čo zvládne umenie lietať, kúpi si počítač a naučí sa pracovať s astronomickým softvérom, pokúšajúc sa nájsť svoju jaskyňu spred miliónov rokov. V tomto dieli sa tiež odohrá niečo, čo v prudkom kontraste s bežnými výsledkami akéhokoľvek úsilia dokáže celkom potešiť Marvina.

K zodpovednosti za výbuch sa prihlásili tí, čo vždy. Najprv IRA, potom OOP a nakoniec plynárne. Dokonca aj Britská rada pre jadrovú energetiku sa poponáhľala s vyhlásením, že situácia je dokonale pod kontrolou. že to bola udalosť s pravdepodobnosťou jedna k miliónu, nedošlo k prakticky nijakémuúniku radiácie a miesto výbuchu bude raz perfektnou lokalitou na výlety rodín s deťmi, kým musela zdráhavo pripustiť, že s tým nemá absolútne nič spoločné. Nijaká príčina výbuchu sa však nenašla. Výbuch v termináli momentálne oficiálne nazývali „aktom vyššej moci". Akej vyššej moci? uvažoval Dirk. A prečo? Aká vyššia moc by sa poflakovala po termináli číslo dva na letisku Heathrow a snažila sa chytiť let do Osla o 15:37?

Druhý diel štvordielnej trilógie – tak označil pokračovanie Stopárovho sprievodcu galaxiou Douglas Adams. Humor tohoto druhu je v knihe všadeprítomný. Mimochodom – dielov je v skutočnosti päť. Po výdatnom posilnení na pokraji totálnej skazy všetkého, čo kedy vo vesmíre existovalo, sa hrdinovia chtiac-nechtiac musia znova pustiť do pátrania po mužovi, ktorý vládne svetu. Nebude to ľahké. Neprajníci im prichystali množstvo úskokov, pascí a nástrah, do ktorých vedia neomylne padnúť a ešte neomylnejšie – a nečakanejšie – z nich zasa uniknúť. Zistíme, čo bude pri svojom druhom príchode svojim učeníkom zvestovať veľký prorok Zarkon, kto v skutočnosti stojí za demoláciou Zeme, prečo je výhodné mať zviera, ktoré túži nechať sa skonzumovať, a ako sa vo vesmíre varí čaj.

V piatom dieli sa nestretneme s Marvinom (dosiahol prvý moment šťastia v živote, keď úspešne zosnul), ani so Zafodom, ale zato sa nám objavuje úplne nová Trillian (Tricia McMillanová, ktorá neodišla so Zafodom, lebo sa vrátila po kabelku) a Arthurova pubertálna dcéra, o mene ktorej prekladateľ zatiaľ nerozhodol. Arthur ju mal s Trillian, či skôr ona s ním, pretože k splodeniu došlo umelým oplodnením. Množstvo časových línií sa splieta a zamotáva, Ford bojuje proti korporácii, ktorá odkúpila novému majiteľovi Stopárovho sprievodcu a na rozdiel od toho pôvodného je stelesnením kapitalistického podnikania („ani časopriestor už nie je v bezpečí pred kapitalizmom“), a Arthur po tom, čo vďaka časopriestorovej anomálii príde o Fenchurch, hľadá šťastie na pokojnej, priam idylickej planétke, kde nájde uplatnenie jeho genialita pri výrobe sendvičov.

Čo majú spoločné mŕtva mačka, počítačový fanatik, elektrický mních presvedčený, že svet je ružový, kvantová mechanika, vyše 200 rokov starý profesor chronológie, Samuel Taylor Coleridge (básnik) a pizza?
