Bei einem Gefecht mit einem Klingonen Schlachtschiff wird ein Mitglied der Enterprise-Crew lebensgefährlich verwundet. Nur ein Heilverfahren, das eben auf Vulkan erforscht wird, kann sein Leben retten. Kirk, Spock und McCoy bringen den Patienten zur Vulkan-Akademie, wo auch Amanda, Spocks Mutter, in einer Stasiskammer behandelt wird. Plötzlich tauchen Störungen im Programm des computergesteuerten Stasis-Verfahrens auf. Eine vulkanische Patientin stirbt in der Stasiskammer, kurz darauf auch der Lieutenant von der Enterprise. Liegt ein technischer Defekt vor, oder hat ein heimtückischer Mörder den Akademie-Computer manipuliert? Doch ein so unlogisches Verbrechen wie Mord ist in der friedlichen und disziplinierten Gesellschaft Vulkans undenkbar. Spock muß um das Leben seiner Mutter fürchten und versucht, alle möglichen Fehlerquellen zu eliminieren. Captain Kirk schlüpft in die Rolle des Detektivs und stellt Nachforschungen auf eigene Faust an. Da bricht ein Großbrand in der Akademie aus, und alles scheint vergebens gewesen zu sein.
