This comprehensive study examines maritime strategies in the Asia-Pacific region and explores potential technical cooperation with German maritime industries. It assesses the strategic concepts and naval capabilities of coastal countries, highlighting Asia's significance for global trade and international stability. The region, spanning from the Indian Ocean to the Far East, is vital for the freedom of navigation and the unrestricted use of sea-lanes of communication (SLOCs). Historically, military concerns dominated maritime discussions, focusing on secure transport during military tensions. However, the current emphasis has shifted towards economic factors, while ensuring freedom of navigation remains essential, often requiring military or maritime support and advanced technical equipment. Key questions arise regarding the preparedness of regional and external nations to address these challenges, the capabilities of their navies to adapt to the evolving security landscape, and the potential for international cooperation. An international team of experts, led by the Asia Strategic Institute Hong Kong and the Institute of International Relations at the German Federal Armed Forces University in Munich, tackles these pressing issues in this joint study.
