Aldous Huxley Knihy
Aldous Leonard Huxley (* 26. júl 1894, Godalming, Surrey – † 22. november 1963, Los Angeles, Kalifornia) bol anglický spisovateľ, autor vedecko-fantastických románov, v ktorých riešil otázku ľudskej slobody v pretechnizovanej spoločnosti (Prekrásny nový svet), zobrazoval londýnsku spoločnosť (Kontrapunkt). Huxley vydával časopis „Oxford Poetry“, publikoval poviedky, poéziu, cestopisy, filmové príbehy a scenáre. Huxley strávil poslednú časť života v Spojených štátoch, v Los Angeles od 1937.

Román Kontrapunkt predstavuje vrcholné dielo jedného z najvýraznejších anglických spisovateľov tohto storočia. Prvý raz vyšiel roku 1928 a dodnes nestratil nič zo svojej pôsobivosti, originality, vtipnej hravosti a vážnej polemickosti, ktorými Huxley doslova očaril čitateľov medzi dvoma svetovými vojnami. Tieto charakterové i názorové protiklady autor predstavuje s ľahkou iróniou, satiricky i veľmi vážne, s dôkladným poznaním duševného i morálneho úpadku vyšších vrstiev anglickej spoločnosti po prvej svetovej vojne.
Was soll Frau Krähe nur tun?
Snad nejznámější kniha anglického autora a filosofa.

An inspired gathering of religious writings that reveals the "divine reality" common to all faiths, collected by Aldous Huxley "The Perennial Philosophy," Aldous Huxley writes, "may be found among the traditional lore of peoples in every region of the world, and in its fully developed forms it has a place in every one of the higher religions." With great wit and stunning intellect—drawing on a diverse array of faiths, including Zen Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Christian mysticism, and Islam—Huxley examines the spiritual beliefs of various religious traditions and explains how they are united by a common human yearning to experience the divine. The Perennial Philosophy includes selections from Meister Eckhart, Rumi, and Lao Tzu, as well as the Bhagavad Gita, Tibetan Book of the Dead, Diamond Sutra, and Upanishads, among many others.

This volume of essays - on the theme of man's relationship with the environment, both natural and social - illuminates not only the problems, but also the potentialities of the modern world. Huxley alerted the world to the dangers of the deteriorating planet over 30 years ago.
Man cannot live fully until he has considered the great questions of life. It is for this reason that we turn to Western psychology and metaphysics for help in solving our problems. The approach of psychology and psychotherapy is based on "statistical normality," or the behavior of the greatest number. In an effort to conform, we focus on our problems rather than our possibilities, emulating a norm that falls drastically short of our full capacity for development. Oriental thought, and Zen thought in particular, seeks to activate the true potential of men and women--to transform our lives, and thereby enable us to shed our problems and suffering. The Supreme Doctrine applies the essence of Oriental Wisdom to the pursuit of self-knowledge and transcendence. The first step in a holistic psychology is to begin examining the true “state of man”, rather than its aberrations. In so doing, we can give new direction and purpose to our lives. The author does not advocate “conversion” to Eastern thought, but rather an integration of East and West, wherein Western psychological thinking and reasoning can be enriched and clarified by Oriental wisdom.

Huxley s vision of the future in his astonishing 1931 novel Brave New World -- a world of tomorrow in which capitalist civilization has been reconstituted through the most efficient scientific and psychological engineering, where the people are genetically designed to be passive, consistently useful to the ruling class.

Written at the height of his powers immediately after Brave New World , Aldous Huxley's highly acclaimed Eyeless in Gaza is his most personal novel. Huxley's bold, nontraditional narrative tells the loosely autobiographical story of Anthony Beavis, a cynical libertine Oxford graduate who comes of age in the vacuum left by World War I. Unfulfilled by his life, loves, and adventures, Anthony is persuaded by a charismatic friend to become a Marxist and take up arms with Mexican revolutionaries. But when their disastrous embrace of violence nearly kills them, Anthony is left shattered—and is forced to find an alternative to the moral disillusionment of the modern world.

Aldous Huxley's lifelong concern with the dichotomy between passion and reason finds its fullest expression both thematically and formally in his masterpiece Point Counter Point. By presenting a vision of life in which diverse aspects of experience are observed simultaneously, Huxley characterizes the symptoms of "the disease of the modern man" in the manner of a composer--themes and characters are repeated, altered slightly, and played off one another in a tone that is at once critical and sympathetic. First published in 1928, Huxley's satiric view of intellectual life in the '20s is populated with characters based on such celebrities as D.H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Nancy Cunard, and John Middleton Murry, as well as Huxley himself.

Huxley's essays on art, literature, philosophy and everyday life reflect his love of the provocative, the breadth of his erudition and, above all, his inexhaustible curiosity.
In 1634 Urbain Grandier, a handsome and successful seducer and priest of the parish of Loudun, was burned at the stake. He had been found guilty of causing the possession of a Prioress and her nuns by devils. Despite extreme torture he had refused to confess and four years after his death the hapless nuns were still "possessed", as was the Jesuit brought in to exorcise them. The events which led to Grandier’s horrible death began with a practical joke... or perhaps with the unhappy custom which forced women to enter the convent when what obsessed them was not the love of God, but the need for the love of a man. This is the most astonishing case of mass "possession" in history. It has all the elements of the most daring modern bestsellers: sexual frankness, malice, superstition, pain, revenge. But in Huxley's hands this is no mere recounting of sensational events. Working from contemporary sources he builds up a complete picture not only of the events at Loudun, but also of the very nature of witchcraft and possession. "I find myself captivated by the range of Mr Huxley's knowledge and his even more extraordinary intelligence" --SUNDAY TIMES Front cover shows a detail from a fifteenth-century painting by Thierry Bouts entitled: The Torments of the Damned. Thirty years ago, ecstasy and torment took hold of John Rivers, shocking him out of “half-baked imbecility into something more nearly resembling the human form.” He had an affair with the wife of his mentor, Henry Maartens—a pathbreaking physicist, winner of the Nobel Prize, and a figure of blinding brilliance—bringing the couple to ruin. Now, on Christmas Eve while a small grandson sleeps upstairs, John Rivers is moved to set the record straight about the great man and the radiant, elemental creature he married, who viewed the renowned genius through undazzled eyes.

This version is not available in the US. Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), renowned for his literary vision, was the grandson of Thomas H. Huxley, a defender of Darwin. Born in England, he was educated at Eton and Oxford, and traveled extensively, spending time in Italy during the 1920s. Huxley started his career with poetry and critical essays before transitioning to novels. Although he missed participating in World War I, his early works, such as CROME YELLOW (1921), ANTIC HAY (1923), and POINT COUNTER POINT (1928), captured a sense of purposelessness that resonated with British society. A satirical tone emerged in BRAVE NEW WORLD (1932), leading to works with fantastic or speculative themes, including AFTER MANY A SUMMER DIES THE SWAN (1939) and APE AND ESSENCE (1948). His final work, ISLAND (1962), presents a utopian vision. In his later years, Huxley expressed disdain for Western society, exploring Eastern mysticism and psychedelic drugs, as detailed in THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION (1954). MORTAL COILS is a collection of short stories from Huxley's early period, featuring one of his most popular tales, "The Gioconda Smile."
