Der junge Geologe William Lindesay hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Große Mauer von der Wüste Gobi bis zum Gelben Meer entlang zu laufen. Voller Begeisterung beginnt er seine abenteuerliche Tour, auf der er nicht nur die Gastfreundschaft der Einheimischen kennen lernt, sondern auch das Herz seiner großen Liebe Wu Qi, seiner späteren Ehefrau, gewinnt. Zur Zeit seines langen Laufs, der zwei Jahre dauern wird (1986 - 1987), waren in China jedoch noch viele Regionen und Städte für Fremde gesperrt, und so wird der Autor immer wieder von der staatlichen Sicherheitspolizei aufgegriffen, oft tagelang verhört und dann unweigerlich nach Beijing zurückgeschickt. Trickreich und mit viel Mut macht Lindesay sich jedoch immer wieder auf, sein Vorhaben zu Ende zu führen.
