Sonja Gangl has a special position in contemporary art as both a conceptual artist and a graphic artist. Two complementary books, CAPTURED and COVERED, now illustrate the focal points of her recent work. CAPTURED presents a body of works called “The End” – photorealistic drawings of the final frames of famous films – as well as large-format drawings of film stills. COVERED brings together illuminated display cases and painted-over film posters as well as “XXX_Movie”, a video work included here as a 60-page flick book. The images in this volume were taken from pornographic and lifestyle magazines and were in parts painted over or covered with black or white bars, thus putting into question both their own truth and the truth of our perception. Shown in many national and international exhibitions, Sonja Gangl’s works have won numerous awards and are collected by museums such as the Albertina and the museum moderner kunst stiftung ludwig (mumok) in Vienna.
