Swiss artist H. R. Giger (1940–2014) gained fame for designing the alien creature in Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror film Alien (1979), for which he won an Oscar. The Alien is undoubtedly the star of Giger's extensive arsenal of biomechanical beings, yet it is just one of many hybrids of human and machine that populate his nightmarish visions. These creatures possess an intense power, terrifying beauty, morbid eroticism, and surreal fantasy. Giger created a wholly unique visual world, expressing the collective fears of his time: anxiety about nuclear war, overpopulation, dwindling resources, and a future where the survival of our bodies may depend on machines.
