In 1586, Sir Nicholas Beauvallet, a notorious corsair of the Elizabethan era and a favorite of the Queen, sails the seas aboard the "Venture," plundering Spanish ships. Known as 'Mad Nicholas' to friends and 'Scourge of Spain' to enemies, he thrives on challenges. During a return trip to Spain, Doña Dominica de Rada y Sylva, a beautiful heiress, is horrified when her galleon is attacked by pirates. To her shock, the captor is Beauvallet, infamous for his ruthless reputation. Determined not to be a hostage, Dominica attempts to kill him but finds herself drawn to his boyish charm. Sir Nicholas, instead of treating her as a mere captive, is captivated by her courage and beauty. He unexpectedly releases her and her father unharmed on the shores of Spain, but not before vowing to return for Dominica, intending to claim her as his bride. This promise leads him to risk his life by returning to Spain, where a bounty awaits him, and the dangers of the Spanish Inquisition threaten his Protestant faith in a Catholic land. His reckless pursuit of love becomes a venture as perilous as any he has faced on the high seas.
