During a campaign in Siberia under Ivan the Terrible, the feared Don Cossacks leave behind pillaged villages, defeated men, and abused women. In a village along the Volga, the wild Cossack Muschkow encounters the young Marina Lupin. Instead of resorting to brute force, he finds himself falling in love. To keep this love, he takes Marina captive, forcing her to serve as his stable boy while dressed in men's clothing.
