In this entry of the series, Yorkshire's Superintendent Andy Dalziel and Inspector Peter Pascoe play significant roles, but the focus shifts to a captivating cast of women. Other notable female characters include the resilient Constable Shirley Novello, who, despite her initial dislike for Ellie, volunteers to protect her; elderly activist Feenie Macallum; and con artist Kelly Cornelius, connected to IRA gun runners and Colombian drug dealers. Together, these women devise a powerful and dangerous plan for revenge against the threats they face. Reginald Hill skillfully captures their struggles and resilience, showcasing that the boundaries of mystery are limitless.
