Once a year, the steamship "Gute Hoffnung" sails from Europe to the South Sea island of Lampur. The South Sea evokes images of paradise, but Lampur is the island of the lepers, the outcasts. On board is entrepreneur Fritz Kahlmeyer, who intends to visit his wife with the firm resolve to have her property transferred to him. Accompanying him is Luise Garbusch, his secretary and lover.
