On a spring morning in 1358, the body of a young woman floats in the Arno. Is the victim, murdered in a clumsy manner, the beautiful Nenetta from the finest brothel in Florence? The man who discovers the body takes it upon himself to solve the case. He is the clever beggar monk Lapo Mosca, traveling from his monastery in Fiesole to Siena. During his journey through Tuscany, he repeatedly encounters people who had connections to the deceased.
