This guide presents the collections of the Musée d'Orsay, covering a period from 1848 to 1914 and encompassing works from various arts: painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, and decorative arts. It also recounts the history of the site and the building, originally the Gare d'Orléans designed by architect Victor Laloux between 1898 and 1900. The station was decommissioned just before World War II and only became a museum in 1989 after extensive interior renovations. The international acclaim of the Musée d'Orsay is largely due to its collection of Impressionist works, the largest in the world. This richly illustrated guide includes many recent acquisitions that were not featured in previous editions.
