In October 1814, as Europe’s diplomats gather in Vienna post-war, London is gripped by a series of chilling murders reminiscent of the Ratcliffe Highway killings from three years prior. In 1811, two families were brutally slain, and a young Irish seaman, John Murphy, was arrested but died by suicide before trial, leading to a false sense of security in the city. However, the recent murder of lead investigator Sir Edwin Pym in a similar fashion reignites public fear and speculation. With the city in turmoil, Bow Street magistrate Sir Henry Lovejoy seeks the help of his friend, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin. While Pym’s colleagues dismiss the connection between the two cases, Sebastian grows increasingly convinced that Murphy was not the true murderer. As he delves deeper into the past, he uncovers unsettling truths that challenge the narrative of the closed case. The question looms: who is the real killer lurking in the shadows?
