However, a monstrous attack leaves her and the cold, one-eyed captain, Gáspár Bárány, as the only survivors. Gáspár, a disgraced prince, is desperate to stop his cruel brother, who threatens to unleash a violent reign against pagans and the Yehuli. Understanding the pain of being an outcast, he and Évike forge a fragile alliance to thwart his brother's ambitions. Their journey takes them from the harsh northern tundra to the oppressive capital, where mutual disdain gradually transforms into affection, united by their shared experiences of alienation. Yet, as Évike reconnects with her estranged father and uncovers her hidden magic, both must confront the complexities of trust and betrayal, ultimately deciding what they are willing to sacrifice for a nation that has never embraced them.
