Light and darkness have governed life for billions of years, following an ancient and steady rhythm until the invention of the light bulb. Today, streetlights and facade lighting dominate the night, and in built-up areas, it rarely gets completely dark. Seeing the starry sky on a clear night is a rare experience. Light pollution has emerged as one of our truly significant environmental problems, albeit unfamiliar to most. Migratory birds' navigation is disrupted, turtles get lost on their way to the shore, and insect pollination is hindered. The Darkness Manifesto is a book about our need for natural darkness and the importance of allowing the ancient rhythm to continue for the sake of biodiversity and human well-being.
