In a village in the Auvergne, Alphonse Courrier set up shop as an ironmonger and prospered sufficiently to maintain a mistress, Adele, and a wife, Agnes. All goes like clockwork until Alphonse's friend, the local vet, finds himself attracted to Agnes, who is sufficiently bored to reciprocate.
