Rose Macaulay's 1920 satire on British journalism and the newspaper industry returns to print in the UK after seventy years, alongside a new collection of her pacifist writings from 1916 to 1945. The narrative centers on the Potter newspaper empire and the challenges journalists faced in balancing truth with commercial interests during the First World War and into the 1920s. Jane and Johnny Potter, while at Oxford, develop a disdain for their father's popular newspapers but ultimately find themselves working for the family business. Jane's greed drives her to seek more than society permits. Mrs. Potter, a successful romantic novelist, struggles to differentiate between fact and fiction, leading to misguided attempts to uncover the truth about her son-in-law's murder, which result in chaos. Arthur Gideon, an editor for Mr. Potter, grapples with his respect for his employer's integrity while loathing the sensationalist content he must produce. His passionate advocacy against anti-Semitic attacks makes him a target of hostility.
