In 1944 Cornwall, Vivienne Hamilton elopes with a Nazi prisoner-of-war, disappearing without a trace and becoming a disgrace to her family, whose members would not speak of her for over 75 years. In present-day London, Sophie stumbles upon a photograph of her great aunt Vivi from World War Two, leading her into a web of confusion. The image contradicts her family's narrative, showing Vivi at an address linked to a spy network just before her mysterious disappearance. As Sophie grapples with her own turmoil, feeling as shattered as the city in the photograph, she retreats to her family home in rural Cornwall. There, burdened by guilt over her daughter's tragic fate, she becomes increasingly obsessed with Vivi's life. What she uncovers is a tale of a woman who risked everything for love and a hidden family history that may hold the key to Sophie's own future.
