Set in 1920, the story follows Maxwell Cheyne, a naval veteran and writer, who becomes embroiled in a dangerous quest after a gang targets him for a vital letter. After being kidnapped and coerced into revealing its contents, he defies their threats and tracks them to London. His mission to reclaim the letter takes a turn when he is rescued by Joan Merrill, a spirited artist, who joins him in unraveling the mystery behind the letter, believed to contain a ciphered code. Together, they navigate perilous encounters in their pursuit.
