Exploring the complexities of Black life in the Hawaiian Islands, this ethnography reveals the coexistence of vibrant Black culture and unrecognized anti-Black racism. Through a decade of fieldwork, the author examines the experiences of both local and transplants from various backgrounds, highlighting the unique racial dynamics shaped by Hawaii's history. The narrative challenges traditional North American racial frameworks, showcasing how Black residents navigate their identities in a space that, despite its challenges, they often regard as a sanctuary.
