Annie Besant was a multifaceted activist known for her advocacy of human freedom, particularly in promoting self-rule for Ireland and India. A prolific author, she wrote over three hundred works and played a significant role in education, co-founding the Banaras Hindu University. Initially a proponent of atheism and scientific materialism, she later became a prominent figure in theosophy and other social causes.
