Focusing on the interplay of ethnic recognition and self-governance, this book develops a theory explaining the success of post-conflict autonomy arrangements. It emphasizes that peaceful interethnic coexistence hinges on context-specific factors, such as structural inequalities and the role of inclusive institutions. By analyzing nineteen global case studies through Qualitative Comparative Analysis, the author reveals that elite acceptance of autonomy reforms correlates with self-determination and the absence of horizontal inequalities. In-depth examinations of South Tyrol and the Chittagong Hill Tracts further validate these insights.
