The book explores the role of emotional investment in political perspectives as a driving force behind polarization in online discussions. Through three years of observational data from Facebook, along with interviews and surveys, the author argues for a shift from traditional rational discourse to an understanding of online behavior as a performance of self. This performance is fueled by affective connections to political identities, leading to irrational contributions and a tendency to 'other' opposing views, ultimately shaping how individuals engage in political debates.
