As she matures, Theo witnesses significant historical events, including the draft riots and the evolution of race relations in America. The narrative vividly captures the cultural shifts of the era, from the emergence of tap dance to P.T. Barnum's museum, all conveyed through dynamic dialogue that reflects Theo's changing identity and language.
