Set in the tumultuous sixth century, the story unfolds amidst the collapse of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Merovingian Franks. It centers on the fierce rivalry between two queens, Brunhilda and Fredegunda, who embody contrasting ideals. Brunhilda, a Visigoth, aspires to build a just and prosperous realm despite the misogynistic world around her. In stark opposition, Fredegunda, a former slave, resorts to manipulation and violence to achieve her ambitions. The narrative explores themes of power, betrayal, and the struggle for survival in a dark age.
