Set against the backdrop of WWII, the story follows Stephie Steiner, a Jewish girl who has fled Nazi-occupied Vienna for Sweden. As she adjusts to life on a rugged island, Stephie is excited to attend school in Gothenburg, where she meets Sven, a charming older boy with strong anti-Hitler beliefs. While navigating her feelings for Sven, she also grapples with the weight of her family's struggles back home and the pervasive threat of Nazi ideology. Through these challenges, Stephie learns the true value of unexpected friendships.
