Set in the vibrant city of Odierne, the story follows an eight-year-old girl named Duck, raised by a group of street urchins known as the Crowns. As Duck becomes an apprentice to a local baker, her loyalties begin to shift, leading her to question her identity and aspirations. Alongside her journey, an old gargoyle on the cathedral roof yearns to fulfill his purpose of protection. The narrative unfolds through alternating perspectives, exploring themes of love, self-discovery, and the complexities of belonging.
