The Old West's most flamboyant breed were the gunfighters. Whether they were lawmen, bandits or wanton killers, all of them shared a deadly purposefulness. Bat Masterson, a renowned peace officer among the breed, recalled that when it came to settling a dispute, any one of the numerous gunfighters he had known would not have hesitated a moment to 'put-up his life as the stake to be played for.'
