In 1920, Oxford University, for the first time in its long history, admits female students. Four young women—Beatrice, Dora, Marianne, and Otto, known as The Eights—move into neighboring rooms in Corridor 8, each driven by personal motives and secrets, forming an unshakeable friendship. Dora, who never intended to attend university, arrives after losing her brother and fiancé in the war. Politically-minded Beatrice, daughter of a famous suffragette, sees Oxford as a chance for independence and camaraderie. Otto, a former nurse, seeks distraction from her haunting memories while returning to a socialite lifestyle. Lastly, Marianne, the quiet daughter of a village pastor, harbors a shocking secret she must keep hidden from her new friends to succeed. Amidst historic spires and the lingering effects of the Great War, the four women navigate a turbulent world filled with misogyny, health threats, and the haunting memories of their pasts.
