When she laughs, it sounds like a doorbell, and if I confessed my love, she would laugh, thinking it a joke. Love is serious, a matter of life and death, and one day she will understand that. Zoe, a pretty schoolteacher; Jenny, a former hand model turned model wife; and Nadia, a free spirit entertaining at children's parties—three women in London facing different challenges and dreams, all linked by a sadistic stalker. As summer heat envelops them, they receive unsettling letters revealing they are being watched, leading them to question their safety. Initially, they, along with the police, dismiss the threats as the work of a harmless crank, believing themselves invulnerable. However, the narrative follows their descent from denial to terror, culminating in the grim realization that the stalker poses a genuine threat to their lives. French masterfully depicts how the letters invade their existence, fracturing relationships and pushing them toward madness. The irony lies in the fact that the stalker's threats not only threaten their lives but also expose their inner flaws and fears. French's keen psychological insight into the women's vulnerabilities creates a compelling portrait, making the eventual murders feel almost secondary to the emotional unraveling of the characters, evoking both sympathy and a sense of voyeuristic guilt.
