Wild Geese caused a sensation when it was first published in 1925. As Carlyle King says in his introduction to this edition, it was unheard of, in a generation bred on sentimental escapist literature, to create a main female character "as wild as a broncho and as vivid as a tigress"; to pain so strong and uncompromising a picture of human passion and human need.
