Over six years, Alice Goffman immersed herself in a Philadelphia neighborhood, documenting the daily struggles of young men facing routine stops, searches, and raids. She became roommates with Mike and Chuck, two friends balancing low-wage jobs and the drug trade, caught in a relentless cycle of court cases and probation. The narrative reveals the experiences of their girlfriends and mothers enduring police raids, as well as the challenges faced by "clean" residents trying to maintain their lives amid the chaos.
