Discusses the efforts of Pius XII and of the Vatican to save Jews during the German occupation of Rome in 1943-44, contending that they did whatever they could. The Pope ordered Rome's Catholic institutions to open their doors to the Jews. Jews were hidden in private homes, convents, monasteries, local parishes, hospitals, and other Vatican institutions. States that of the 12,000 Jews living in Rome, many were saved by the Church. The Gestapo rounded up and deported almost 2,000, most of whom perished in the camps.
