Ruling Japan for nearly 700 years, members of the samurai class fought for control of Japan and to keep Japan free of foreign influence. From their inception in the Heian Period to the bloody Onin Wars, the history of the samurais is a history of political and military struggle. This book overviews that history, repeatedly making the point that the history of the samurai is an integral part of the history of Japan.
