Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) became a classic, as well as a legend, in his own lifetime. He is widely acknowledged to be the leading figure in twentieth-century art. From the blue and cubist periods onwards, his imaginative effort was central to the development of the new artistic age. This self-styled "painter without a style" dazzled the world by his inventive genius and technical virtuosity, constantly developing his work by mysterious process of spontaneous change which owed nothing to rules.
