Peter Jordan, once a celebrated child star of Hollywood, has fallen into obscurity and alcoholism, burdened by guilt for betraying a beloved Jewish woman in Berlin during the "Kristallnacht" in 1938. His life becomes even more complicated due to a passionate and destructive relationship with his stepdaughter. Desperate for a comeback, he resorts to any means necessary. Natascha Petrowna, a Russian doctor, helps him escape to Rome to see a psychotherapist. Here, the deeply troubled Jordan confesses his guilt, and while his return to the film industry becomes a sensational event worldwide, he experiences a personal renaissance in silence. At the last moment, he decides to take the "difficult path" and atone for his sins.
